Choosing the right mattress size is a balancing act between personal sleeping comfort and the physical limits of your bedroom. For many solo sleepers, a standard single mattress feels too restrictive, while a queen mattress takes up far too much valuable floor space. The super single mattress serves as a highly versatile middle ground, offering a tailored solution that balances individual comfort with spatial efficiency.
To make the right choice, you must evaluate your sleeping habits, measure your available floor space, and consider your long-term living arrangements. Comparing these three standard sizes will help you identify the perfect fit for your home.
Comparing the Footprint: Super Single vs Single vs Queen Dimensions
To understand how each mattress fits into your room, you must first look at the exact physical dimensions. Standard mattress sizes follow a consistent regional convention. A standard single mattress measures 91cm in width and 190cm in length, making it the most compact option available for adults.

minus one start due to 3rd party logistics service. The guys just lay down the mattress on my new bedframe without removing the dirty and dusty plastic at door step. There was 2 individual plastic wrapped. The outer piece is very dirty and dusty after they left it for me to remove it. The. I realised actually there is another 2nd plastic wrapped. Anyway the seller's service is very good. Mattress quality is good and it is firm enough.

The super single mattress steps up the width to 107cm while maintaining the same standard length of 190cm. This provides an additional 16cm of lateral space, which significantly changes how much room you have to roll over and adjust your sleeping position.
At the larger end of the spectrum, a standard queen mattress measures 152cm in width and 190cm in length. This size is 45cm wider than a super single and 61cm wider than a standard single, making it the baseline choice for couples or individuals who prioritize maximum sleeping space.
When planning your room layout, remember that these measurements represent only the mattress itself. A typical bed frame will add an extra 2cm to 10cm to both the width and length, depending on whether you choose a slim metal frame, a wooden platform, or an upholstered divan. You must account for this frame overhang to avoid unexpected crowding against walls or other furniture.
Space Diagnosis: Will a Super Single Mattress Fit Your Room?
Before purchasing any bed, you must perform a thorough spatial diagnosis of your bedroom. Start by clearing the area where you plan to place the bed and using masking tape to outline the exact dimensions of the mattress and frame on the floor. This physical outline allows you to visualize how much floor area remains for daily activities.
A critical factor in bedroom design is maintaining adequate walking clearance around the sides of the bed. You should aim for a minimum of 60cm of open space on any side of the bed that you plan to walk past. If your bedroom features built-in wardrobes with swing-out doors, you may need 70cm of clearance to ensure they open fully without striking the frame.
In compact apartment bedrooms, such as those found in modern HDB flats or condominiums, space is at a premium. Placing a queen bed in a small room can leave you with virtually no space for a study desk, a bedside table, or a vanity. Opting for a super single mattress instead of a queen frees up approximately 45cm of width, which is often exactly the amount of space needed to fit a functional workspace or a comfortable walkway.
If your room layout forces you to push one side of the bed against a wall, a super single is highly manageable. It is narrow enough that making the bed or changing the sheets remains relatively easy, whereas pushing a queen bed against a wall makes changing the linens a frustrating physical chore.
Sleep Style Assessment: Do You Need the Extra Width?
Your physical build and nighttime movement patterns are just as important as the size of your room. If you are an active sleeper who frequently tosses, turns, or sleeps with your arms and legs splayed out, a standard single mattress can feel incredibly restrictive. On a 91cm-wide single bed, active movement often results in limbs hanging over the edge, which can disrupt your sleep cycle.
The 107cm width of a super single mattress provides a crucial safety margin for active sleepers. It allows you to roll over comfortably without the constant, subconscious fear of falling off the bed. This extra width is also highly beneficial for individuals with broader shoulders or taller frames, as it provides the necessary surface area to relax the upper body completely.
Teenagers undergoing rapid growth spurts also benefit immensely from the transition to a super single. A standard single bed that felt perfectly adequate during childhood can quickly begin to feel cramped as a teenager grows. Investing in a super single mattress ensures that the bed remains comfortable and supportive throughout their teenage years and into young adulthood.
The extra width also comfortably accommodates a pet or a child during bedtime reading without crowding your sleeping space.
Decision Branches: When to Choose a Standard Single or Queen Instead
While the super single mattress is an excellent compromise, there are clear scenarios where you should choose either a standard single or a queen instead. Sizing down to a standard single is the most logical path if you are working with a highly restricted floor plan, such as a very small guest room, a helper’s room, or a compact nursery. It is also the most budget-friendly option for a young child’s first bedroom.
Conversely, you should size up to a queen mattress if you plan to share the bed with a partner on a regular basis. While a super single can accommodate two people in a temporary pinch, it does not offer enough width for two adults to sleep comfortably night after night without disrupting each other’s rest. A queen mattress is also the preferred choice if you have a spacious master bedroom and want to avoid the room looking empty or under-furnished.
Cost is another factor to weigh when choosing between these three sizes. Generally, a super single mattress and its corresponding bed frame carry a modest price premium of S$50 to S$150 over standard single equivalents. However, upgrading to a queen mattress represents a more significant financial step up, often costing S$200 to S$500 more for the mattress alone, alongside higher costs for queen-sized sheets, duvets, and protectors.
Logistics and Compatibility Checklist Before Buying
Before you finalize your purchase, you must verify several logistical details to ensure a smooth delivery and setup process. First, measure the entry points of your home, including the width of your front door, the clearance of your hallways, and the internal dimensions of your building’s lift or stairwells. Tight corners in older apartment buildings can still present unexpected delivery challenges.
Next, double-check the specifications of your existing or planned bed frame. You must ensure that the frame is explicitly labeled as supporting a super single mattress (107cm x 190cm). Placing a super single mattress on a standard single frame will cause the mattress to overhang the edges, damaging the internal support structure over time, while placing it on a queen frame will leave unsightly, hazardous gaps.
Finally, consider the availability of bedding accessories. While super single bedsheets, mattress protectors, and fitted sheets are widely available in Singapore, some international bedding brands or niche designer labels only produce sheets in standard single, queen, and king sizes. If you have a specific, imported bedding set in mind, verify that they offer a super single option before committing to this mattress size.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Can I use standard single bedsheets on a super single mattress?
No, you should not use standard single bedsheets on a super single mattress. Standard single sheets are designed for a 91cm width, whereas a super single mattress is 107cm wide. Stretching a standard single sheet over a super single mattress will tear the fabric or cause the corners to pop off constantly.
Is a super single mattress suitable for two people?
A super single mattress is not recommended for two adults as a permanent sleeping arrangement. At 107cm wide, it does not provide enough individual space for two people to sleep side-by-side comfortably. However, it can comfortably accommodate a parent cuddling a small child for bedtime stories, or a solo sleeper with a small pet.
Do I need a special bed frame for a super single mattress?
Yes, you must use a bed frame specifically designed for a super single mattress. A standard single frame is too narrow, leaving the mattress unsupported, while a queen frame leaves an exposed 45cm gap that allows the mattress to slide.
